How to enter British Council IELTS Prize 2022
You must:
- Be 18 years or above
- A resident of the country you’re applying from (except applicants in Canada)
- Have taken IELTS with British Council between 1 September 2021 and 15 September 2022 and be able to produce a valid IELTS score in the application.
- Have a minimum overall IELTS band score of 5.5 or above
- Be applying to an educational institution, anywhere in the world, that requires IELTS as part of its admission process
- Begin undergraduate or postgraduate studies in academic year 2023/24
- Be able to provide the letter of acceptance from your university latest by 30 September 2022.
Application process
Complete the IELTS Prize online application form and submit it together with uploaded copies of your:
1. British Council IELTS Test Report Form
2. Recent passport size photograph
3. Passport or identification document proving your residency in one of the eligible countries.
4. Special requirements certificate (if applicable)
Forwarding these documents by email to your country’s office is possible too.

Eligibility
Essential eligibility criteria are that applicants must:
- be a resident in one of the following countries: Bangladesh, Canada, Colombia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa (except applicants in Canada)
- begin undergraduate or postgraduate studies in academic year 2023/2024
- attend a higher educational institution that accepts IELTS as part of its admission requirements
- register for an IELTS test with the British Council between 1 September 2021 and 15 September 2022 and be able to produce a valid IELTS score in the application form
- have a minimum overall band score of 5.5or higher
- be able to provide an acceptance letter from the attending institution by latest 1 September 2023.
Shortlisting and final selection
Shortlisting and final selection will be carried out by a panel of British Council staff. The panel will use the personal statement on the application form for shortlisting purposes so applicants should carefully check the task completion criteria on the application form.
The final selection will be done by the panel in a further round, where shortlisted candidates will need to prepare and make a presentation on a specific topic provided to them by British Council.
All applicants with special requirements will automatically be shortlisted provided that they meet essential eligibility criteria.
Personal statement
The personal statement is your chance to tell your story and is crucial in the shortlisting process. It should describe your reasons for applying for a particular course and in what ways you expect your study experience to make a difference to your life and those around you. Write no more than 500 words.
Full applications with the completed application form and required documents must be submitted to the British Council on this portal by 30 September 2022 – 11:59 GMT.

I am currently in my second year of an undergraduate degree course. Can I apply for the British Council IELTS Prize 2022?
No. The IELTS Prize is for students who will begin their undergraduate or postgraduate studies in academic year 2023/2024
Can I apply for the IELTS Prize if I have registered for an IELTS test and have not yet taken it or if I am currently waiting for my IELTS test results?
To qualify for the IELTS Prize, you need to register for an IELTS test with the British Council between 01 September 2021 and 15 September 2022 and be able to produce a valid IELTS score by the time you submit your application.
Can I apply if I am waiting for an acceptance letter from my university?
Yes. Only winners need to provide an acceptance letter from the university they will attend by latest 01 September 2023. This university must use IELTS scores to satisfy their English language requirements for admission.
I took an IELTS test before September 2021. Can I still use that score to apply for the IELTS Prize?
To be eligible for the IELTS Prize, you must register for an IELTS test with the British Council between 01 September 2021 and 15 September 2022.
Am I eligible for the IELTS Prize if I have obtained partial funding through another scholarship or loan scheme?
Yes, you are still eligible. However, it would be better to check with the other scholarship authority on whether they will allow you to receive the IELTS Prize at the same time.
I already have a full tuition scholarship. Am I still eligible to apply?
No, you are not eligible. If you are awarded a full tuition scholarship for 2022 after you have applied for the British Council IELTS Prize, please inform us and we will no longer consider your application.
I have a special requirement. Can I still apply?
Yes, of course. We will shortlist all applicants with special requirements provided they meet the essential eligibility criteria. This includes specific learning difficulties, hearing difficulties and visual difficulties or medical conditions.
What is the final date for applications to be received by British Council?
Completed online applications should be submitted by 30 September 2022 – 11:59 GMT.
