Charles Bullard Fellowship in Forest Research(up to $60,000)2023-2024

The Charles Bullard Fellowship in Forest Research 2023–2024 application period is currently open. Mid-career professionals with a compelling research topic regarding trees, forests, people, or land are eligible for this compensated, 6–12-month fellowship. The Charles Bullard fellowship provides funding for advanced research and study by people who have the potential to significantly advance the fields of forestry and forest-related fields, such as biology, earth sciences, economics, politics, administration, philosophy, humanities, the arts, or law, either as scholars or administrators. Only 5 to 7 grantees are chosen year from a huge pool of applicants for the fellowship, which has a very high standard of competition.

Program Scope

Forest ecology, tree physiology, soil biogeochemistry, microbial ecology, forest resource management, biodiversity conservation, land use planning, and public policy are all fields of research. Fellowships are periodically given out in the environmental humanities and the arts. Please take note that ideas in the humanities and arts must show a clear relationship to the work being done at Harvard Forest.

Stipend for the forest research

  • The stipends for the fellowships range up to $60,000; the sum of each award is determined by the length of the fellowship. The prize might be paid to the fellow individually or to their employer at the fellow’s request.
  • In most cases, the stipend will serve as a supplement to income received in exchange for devoting a time period to research, such as sabbatical pay for academic employees, federally funded training appointments for employees of the federal government, or paid educational leave for employees of the private sector. Fellowships are not meant to cover a sizable portion of the cost of original research.
  • All Bullard Fellows will be compensated for one round trip flight between their Fellowship place and their home base. Also the actual airfare or mileage (at the IRS-determined rate) between the two will be reimbursed, whichever is less. Bullards are liable for the travel expenses of anyone accompanying them.
  • Each Fellow stipend includes $500 in funding for Bullard Fellowship Activities-related equipment.

Eligibility for the forest research

  • Individuals in their mid-career who have established themselves in academia, government, and also commercial sector are eligible.
  • Preference is normally given to those with doctoral degrees in academic careers, but also others whose projects have the potential to make major contributions to forestry and forest studies, broadly defined, will be considered in terms of the likelihood that study and research at Harvard will help fulfill this promise.

Criteria for Evaluation

The Committee’s decisions are generally based on the applicant’s professional achievements, academic background, and possible advantages from connection with the Harvard Forest community and its institutional resources.
